How to Protect and Care for Your Carpet?

17 Nov 2022

If someone accidentally spills a glass of wine on your carpet, or your dog runs in from the garden with muddy paws, this can be a nightmare for you. It’s difficult to keep carpets spotlessly clean in a busy household. Luckily, there are many ways of protecting your carpet. However, if you want to do it properly, there are a few guidelines you should follow for the best results.

In this article from Value Carpet and Flooring, we’ll be taking you through those guidelines. After reading this article, you’ll have the right knowledge to protect and care for your carpet keeping it clean and in the best condition possible.

Vacuum Regularly

One of the easiest ways to maintain your carpet is to vacuum it regularly to pick up everyday dirt and debris. There are many vacuum cleaners available on the market. For an extra clean and fresh smelling carpet,  sprinkle a carpet freshener such as shake and vac over your carpet before vacuuming, this will eliminate unpleasant odours and leave your home smelling incredibly fresh.

Treat Stains Immediately

Have you ever experienced panic after spilling food or a drink on your carpet? The quick rush to clean it up as soon as possible? It’s good to act quickly before the strain dries and sets in. The effective cleaning solution depends on the type of stain. Generally, for most stains, firstly use a towel to dab it so that you clean up as much of the stain as you can. Never rub the stain as this will push it deeper into the carpet fibres. The next step is to spray carpet cleaner directly on the stain and allow it to soak for a few minutes, or for as long as instructed. Finally, use a damp cloth to blot the stain away.

“No-Shoes” Rule

The best way to protect your carpet is to simply remove all shoes at the front door. It can take trial and error to make this into a good habit and to persuade others to follow suit. But when shoes are removed at the door, the results are beyond rewarding. Shoes and footwear can bring all sorts of mud, dirt, and even germs into your home, and not to mention leaving unwanted footprints on your clean carpet.

Protect From Heavy Furniture

Spills and shoes aren’t the only things that can mark your carpet. You may not think of it, but your furniture can actually damage your carpet. It can flatten the carpet fibres, causing horrible permanent marks. This may not be a problem now, but when you want to move your furniture around, uneven marks in your carpet might be visible. To prevent this nightmare, place furniture glides, castor cups, or rubber feet under heavy furniture such as your sofa, TV unit, bookcases, table, etc.

Bring In The Professionals

No matter how much you vacuum and clean your carpet, sometimes deep stains won’t budge.

If you want to go the extra mile, get your carpets professionally cleaned once or twice a year. This is the most effective way to give heavily stained carpets a deep clean and look brand new again.
