If you are trying to improve the smell of a carpet, rather than trying to remove a stain, the likes of dry or powder carpet cleaners are great as they can neutralise the scent.
If you have a stain in your carpet, you are better off with a powered carpet cleaner, and to do the whole carpet as only doing sections can leave your carpet patchy (and none of us want a two tone carpet when it should be all one colour!).
If you have chosen to use a wet carpet cleaner, such as a wet/dry vac, ensure that you are removing as much of the water as possible. Water left in your carpet can not only leave behind dirt, it can also promote the growth of mould and bacteria, meaning your carpet will end up worse off.
A great method to remove surface discolouration after hoovering is the steam cleaner. This method avoids using shampoos and harsh chemicals to clean your carpet. The use of steam can help remove light staining, and any bugs and bacteria that are growing in your carpets.
If you opt for a wet or steam clean, try to not walk on your carpet until the area is completely dry in order for it to dry evenly and not be compacted underfoot.
